Family fun in Cambridge
There’s a lot to love about Cambridge with many activities that are low cost or don’t cost a cent, making it the perfect place for families looking to enjoy quality time together.
Here are 10 top picks for things to do with family.
1. Playgrounds are plentiful
Regardless of where you are in Cambridge, there’s always a playground nearby to keep the kids (and adults) entertained. These well-maintained spaces feature swings, slides, flying foxes, climbing frames, open fields, courts, and more. Make sure you tick off the spectacular latest destination playground located in the Bridleways Estate off Hamilton Road.
2. Picnic in the park
Pack a picnic and head to a local park at Lake Te Koo Utu. The shaded walking tracks are great for kids, and the lake’s peaceful surroundings make it perfect for a family outing. Don’t miss the Free Form waterfall. At the top of one of the lookout points, you’ll find exercise equipment, rose gardens, the band rotunda, and a well-shaded play area for kids of all ages. Walk around the top of the lake, and explore other hidden tracks as you go.
3. Visit Victoria Square
Let the kids burn off energy at Victoria Square. With its central location, it’s an easy stop during a day out exploring Cambridge. The grassy areas are perfect for watching cricket, playing frisbee, flying a kite, or simply relaxing at the picnic tables. Every Saturday morning, the Cambridge Farmers’ Market offers a vibrant spot to soak in the town’s atmosphere. EV charging stations are in close proximity.
4. Stop for a delicious real fruit ice cream
Whether you’re strolling by the river or wandering the boutique-filled streets, a day out in Cambridge is not complete without a real fruit ice cream. Bursting with fresh, local berries blended into creamy, cool ice cream, it’s the perfect way to savour the sweet, natural flavours of our town. Stop by one of the town’s vendors for pure summer in every bite! Many local berry farms and cafés now offer this tasty treat.
5. Serious about cycleways
Grab your bike or lace up your walking shoes to explore the extensive network of cycleways and walking trails in and around Cambridge. A highlight is the magnificent Te Awa River Ride (see more on page 20), a family-friendly trail that winds along the stunning Waikato River. With plenty of picturesque spots to pause and soak in the views, this scenic journey offers the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and relaxation.
6. Terrific Tree Church
For something unique, visit the incredible Tree Church in Ōhaupō – open seasonally - gold coin donation optional. This enchanting living church is a magical place for children to explore and for families to relax.
7. Leamington Domain awaits
The Leamington Domain has a large playground with plenty of equipment to keep kids entertained for hours. The surrounding parkland is perfect for a family picnic or a game of soccer, and it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Nearby tennis and netball courts, and the covered skating area, offer even more opportunities for active fun. Use the supplied BBQs, or carefully time your visit with food trucks and craft markets hosted by Bloom Collective. Top tip: Every other Sunday, the Cambridge Model Engineering Society Inc runs miniature train rides, providing joy for all ages and abilities.

8. Local streets and historic buildings
Take a leisurely walk around Cambridge’s town centre, where you can admire its well-preserved heritage buildings. The town’s historic streets are lined with beautiful trees, quirky shops, and art galleries, offering families a fun and educational stroll while learning about the town’s history.
9. Nature walks along the river
Park up your vehicle and take a scenic nature walk along Poet’s Track (off Pope Terrace). A walkway loop called the Steelway showcases the amazing work of the Cambridge Tree Trust where native and exotic trees line the track. Windows have been left in the planted area to give spectacular views of the Waikato river below, and Victoria bridge.

Step back in time at the Cambridge Museum, where history comes alive through carefully curated exhibits. Discover the rich stories of the town’s past, from early Māori settlement to its equestrian heritage. Perfect for history buffs and curious minds alike, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into what makes Cambridge so special.
